For those who finished playing the game Her Story by Sam Barlow, you can see all the clips in order here. I organized them and made a video for each interview. I’ve also included summaries and the most straightforward explanations of each interview. This will spoil the game completely for anyone who hasn’t played, so I highly suggest walking away if you haven’t played yet.

You can see my walkthrough guide and discussion for more help with the game, other theories and questions.

You can also see the full text transcript here.

Summaries of Each Interview:

If they are twins, I think it makes sense to try and figure out which interview is Hannah and which is Eve. Based on the hair/tattoo/bruise/drinks/story, I think this is how it goes. This is the most obvious and straightforward explanation. My walkthrough guide will cover other ideas, unanswered questions and inconsistencies that might lead us to some new revelation.
*Update: Based on some new information from the transcript, we can see exactly who is talking in each interview. And we can confirm that interview 6 is indeed Hannah. Keep in mind, that this is the most straightforward explanation, and what we’re told to believe by Eve. But many believe that instead of twins, they’re actually one person with multiple personally disorder, who believe they’re twins. There are holes in both theories, so you’ll have to come to your own conclusion. But hopefully my videos and summaries will help.

Interview 1: June 18, 1994. Eve as Hannah. Hair down. Wearing wedding ring. Asks for black coffee. There’s no bruise yet, so it makes sense that Eve is playing as Hannah here. Eve introduces herself as Hannah and talks about her husband, Simon Smith, who has gone missing. She hasn’t seen him in days, which is unlike him. She mentions his boss, Eric, and that he works as a glazier for a glass and mirror company. She wants the police to help find Simon, because she’s worried. It’s not like him to disappear.

Interview 2: June 25, 1994. Hannah as Hannah. Hair up. Wearing wedding ring. Asks for tea with sugar. She has a bruise on her left cheek. She claims she hit a doorknob (righhhht). We learn in Interview 7 that Eve gave her the bruise when they fought over Simon. But for now, her story is that he went missing and she wants the police to find him. The police also ask her to let them take her fingerprints and she mentions that she never had them taken before. Also, she burned her right hand. Was this intentional, to affect the prints?

Interview 3: June 27, 1994. Eve as Hannah (since the bruise is gone). Hair down. Wearing wedding ring. Asks for black coffee. The police suggest that Simon may have been murdered. She talks about the Glasgow trip. It’s possible that Eve is the one who came in for questioning this time since she’s the one who went to Glasgow, not Hannah. That way she could give the details without messing it up. She also says she didn’t have her license on her, and we learn in the final interview that Hannah passed the driving test for both of them. Perhaps there’s some connection between the two? Why didn’t she take Hannah’s license if she doesn’t have her own? Eve confuses the side that the bruise was on, as though she were looking at a reflection when she saw it on Hannah’s face. She brushes it off as a fast metabolism, but we’re not supposed to buy that story. She throws up, says it’s morning sickness. She’s pregnant (Eve later tells us as herself that she’s pregnant). The detective also shows Eve some drawings and Eve describes them. She describes one as Rapunzel, like the fairy tales she used to read as a child. There’s a lot of mirroring to her own story that we learn later.

Interview 4: June 30, 1994. Hannah as Hannah. Hair up. Wearing wedding ring. Asks for tea with sugar. She’s wearing short sleeves and there’s no tattoo like we see the next day on Eve. She’s very chatty. She talks about her miscarriage and her parents dying in the same year, 1984. They were poisoned with death cap mushrooms, even though her father was a mushrooms expert. It’s heavily implied later in the game that Eve killed their parents. Hannah mentions Eve, calls her a childhood friend who she tried to drown at some point. Then scolds herself for talking about Eve and taps a code to Eve. The detective asks her about fingerprints they found in her home. It seems that they were asking if she has any close relatives because the prints were close to her own? That would strongly suggest the twin theory is true. But she asks if they could have been from her parents, if they would last that long.

Interview 5: July 1, 1994. Eve as Hannah. Hair down. Wearing wedding ring. Asks for black coffee. She starts in a white shirt and spills coffee on herself. She then changes into a short-sleeved t-shirt that reveals a tattoo we’ve never seen before. She claims to have gotten it to express her individuality eight years ago. It’s of an apple and a snake (Eve got the tattoo — it represents the Garden of Eden). (Did Eve intentionally spill her coffee on herself to reveal her tattoo? And if so, why? Was Hannah in on that or was she trying to throw Hannah under the bus here?)
The detective asks her about the ticket she got back in February, six months ago. She was caught on camera at the same time that someone saw here (or her likeness) with Simon at a hotel in Oxford. She finally confessed that they snuck away for a romantic weekend. It’s not clear why the police drop it now that they have evidence she was in two places at once (plus the tattoo). She then plays a song on her guitar for the detective. It’s strange that they would even ask her (maybe to see if she can indeed play?), but she plays an old ballad called “The Wind and the Rain” about a jealous older sister killing her younger sister. It’s quite a fun, creepy song.

“Dreadful Wind and Rain” Lyrics:

“There were two sisters came walking by the sea
Oh the wind and the rain

The eldest one pushed the other one in
Oh the dreadful wind and rain

See they both had a love for the captain’s son
Oh the wind and the rain

But he only cared for the youngest one
Oh the dreadful wind and rain

Oh the eldest envied her sister fair
Oh the wind and the rain

With her pretty little face and her long blonde hair
Oh the dreadful wind and rain

So she pushed her in and held her down
Oh the wind and the rain

And watched her as she slowly drowned
Oh the dreadful wind and rain

Oh she floated up and she floated down
Oh the wind and the rain

Floated till a ship came by
Oh the dreadful wind and rain

Out comes the captain’s son
Oh the wind and the rain

Father dear here swims a swan
Oh the dreadful wind and rain

Oh ye lay her body on the dock to dry
Oh the wind and the rain

‘Til a fiddler with a fiddle came walking by
Oh the dreadful wind and rain

And he made a fiddle bow of her long hair
Oh the wind and the rain

Yes he made a fiddle bow with her long blonde hair
Oh the dreadful wind and rain

And he made fiddle pegs of her finger bones
Oh the wind and the rain

Yes he made fiddle pegs from her finger bones
Oh the dreadful wind and rain

And he made a fiddle out of her breastbone
Oh the wind and the rain

The sound could pierce a heart of stone
Oh the dreadful wind and rain

But the only tune that the fiddle could play
Was oh the wind and the rain

Yes the only tune that the fiddle could play
Was oh the dreadful wind and rain”

Interview 6: July 2, 1994. Hannah as Eve as Hannah? Hair down. Wearing wedding ring. Asks for coffee with milk and sugar. She’s upset at being called in, says Eleanor had mentioned that they were asking questions about her. The detective has started to suspect that they might be twins and asks about it. She denies being a twin, acts surprised, and challenges them to test her fingerprints against the ones that they took off Hannah in interview 2. She has some harsh words for the detective and storms out like she doesn’t have time for this. She’s not calm like Eve is in interview 7, so that’s another good case for it being Hannah. It’s possible that they knew the police had their suspicions and had caught on to the coffee/tea and hairstyles being different, so they had Hannah take on Eve’s coffee habit and hair down to try and prove to the police that they’re one person. That’s why she offers her fingerprints. But she messes up a bit by asking for milk and sugar in her coffee. Perhaps Eve intentionally let the cops in on the whole twin thing in interview 5 without Hannah’s consent and now Hannah’s freaking out?

Interview 7: July 3, 1994. Hair down. No wedding ring. Eve first as Hannah, shortly confessing to be Eve. Eve starts off pretending to be Hannah. But she’s in a good mood, doesn’t seem phased by anything. She’s very relaxed, doesn’t seem all that concerned about Hannah. She agrees to take a lie detector test and gets all the answers right except for her name (Hannah Smith). It’s possible she did this on purpose because she was eager to tell her story to someone now that Hannah’s gone. So she comes clean, explains the meaning of the tattoo (snake and apple for the forbidden fruit and Garden of Eden). Then she offers to come clean with her whole story, telling about their childhood. Her story goes like this: When they were born, Hannah’s umbilical cord wrapped around Eve’s throat. The midwife (Florence) who lived across the street helped with the birth and told their mother that Eve died so she could raise her as her own. Eve saw her “reflection” across the street and was fascinated by it. She wanted to go to her. But Florence wouldn’t let her. We learn that Florence tripped down the stairs and died (I believe Eve pushed her), so Eve then moved in with Hannah and lived in her attic. They then spent their lives swapping places, pretending to be the same person. They shared boyfriends, including Carl. But that went south. Then there was Simon, who Hannah didn’t want to share. Eve was not happy about this. She explains how Hannah married Simon and didn’t want to share him with Eve, but Eve eventually had an affair with him and got pregnant. On Hannah’s birthday, Simon gave Hannah a mirror for her that was supposed to be one of a kind. When Hannah learned about the affair and the pregnancy, she confronted Eve and they got into a fight, resulting in Hannah’s bruise. Hannah also pulled off Eve’s blonde wig she wears for performing. Eve drove off to Glasgow and Hannah put on Eve’s wig to pretend to be her with Simon. Simon then gave her a mirror just like the other one. So Hannah snapped, broke the mirror and slit his throat with the broken glass. She didn’t mean to — she was just trying to scare him away. Then she called Eve, and they hatched this whole plan, where they would change the time on Simon’s watch so it can coincide with a trip to Glasgow. Then Eve would pretend to be Hannah while Hannah got away. And they can’t arrest Eve because she doesn’t legally exist. There’s no record of Eve’s existence, so she’s basically a ghost.

**Update: After reading this in-depth analysis by Adrian Chmielarz, I’m now pretty much convinced Hannah/Eve are one body with split personalities (MPD) and that neither got away with the murder. This makes me sad, but I can’t un-see it that way now. The last clip is just heart-wrenching and the “please” makes me cringe. I guess there’s no happy ending here after all. 🙁 But then again…there’s still parts of the story that make me think they really are twins and that MPD can’t work. So who knows! What do you think?

    Hi,

Thanks for making this! 🙂 I guess it took quite some time. It really helps me to understand all of this. Especially the “Hannah as Eve as Hannah”-trick confused me.^^

Yeah, I did it the hard way, so it did take a long time. Glad people are finding it useful, though. 🙂

Hi nice work. I agree on most parts of the story. But I couldn’t find any clue who (or even if…) killed their parents. Same with Florence. What makes you confident, that Eve poisened them or pushed Florence?
Thanks again for all that hard work. Although i really like the game, sorting the videos is pain in the ass 😉

Yeah, that was me reading her mannerisms, etc, that way. I should edit it to say we don’t know for sure. You can also see the discussion on my other thread — others agreed that she probably killed her parents.

Thank you very much for this! Makes it a lot easier to dissect and revisit.

Thanks for making this. I just finished the game, and reading the summaries for each interview helps put together some missing pieces. I noticed how she would ask for black coffee in some interviews and tea with sugar in others. I knew that was supposed to be some type of clue, but the coffee with milk and sugar bit threw me off.

Loved the game, I’d still like to know what happened to Eve and Hannah’s parents. My gut says Eve killed them.

    1. AppUnwrapper

I think Eve killed them, too. My other post has a lot more discussion going on if you want to see what others think. 🙂

Ok…First let me say Thank you doing this with the clips, it’s really helped me firm up my opinions watching it like that….Also thank you for your theories, but I believe I have completely figured this out now…The creators have dropped some very subtle (but also some very obvious, glaring) hints at this, and this is what I think it all boils down to: Hannah and “Eve” are the same person, Hannah has Multiple Personality Disorder, but it’s deeper than that..She is also I believe, a homicidal psychopath, and I believe she has been one since being a little child. I believe her first victim was Florence, the mid wife, who has an “accident” and slips down the stairs and dies…The most frightening part about this woman’s pathology (like many psychopath’s) is there was no clear, definable motive to kill Florence (nor simon, nor her actual parents later on)..I believe as a child this girl was extremely disturbed and saw an opportunity to push Florence down the stairs and took it…Maybe just to see what would happen, etc…Her personality may have even fragmented by then already where she believed that she was Eve when she did it (her persona having already “split”)…This leads me to the conclusion that “Eve” as a psychological construct is Evil, or the Evil part of Hannah’s persona, which does her darker bidding…In any event, I also believe that the “Eve” persona killed everyone else involved in the story who we know is dead at least (Including having something to do with the “miscarriage” of the first baby..I think however also that she killed many, many more people before we find her here)….The saddest, and scariest thing about this story I think is that it is actually about a truly demented psychopathic killer, who also suffers from MPD, with very little rhyme or reason behind her actions; and I am left to think that this is the entire point of the story itself…If there were motives for any of these murders, they were completely of a delusional nature, and formed entirely in response to and as resolutions to imaginary inner conflicts within a split personality…The fictional narrative surrounding the distinction between Hannah and Eve, is just that..A fictional pathology within the mind of a deeply disturbed human being…In interview 7 alone there is just too much symbolism pointing to this, and the childhood “fiction” was absolutely ridiculous when you really break down her “story”..This simply cannott be ignored…There are two other key factors to this game that leave me off to this conclusion: 1) The game is called “Her Story”..Not “their” story, it makes a point of making it clear were talking about “Her”..One person (the Hannah “Body”)…2) The observer “Sarah” (whos role we realize we are playing midway through) cannot be discounted…From Sarah’s perspective, having one parent murdered by the other (and then having her mother most likely executed before she could ever get to meet her to question her about all this) accounts for the driving force of this story: which is a child trying to make sense of her Mother and an entire situation which just defies any kind of normal rationality…Sarah only had one biological mother (Hannah or the Hannah “body”)..Who was clearly either found insane for this crime and locked away permanently, or more likely executed for multiple murders, because the video evidence we are presented clearly shows a very dangerous, psychopathic person who appears very cunning at times…This may have in and of itself been enough to convince a jury she deserved death (even if it was clear she was suffering also from MPD, or DPD)…So you as Sarah have come to once and for all try to make sense of what went on here, and watching these interview tapes is the only way you could do so, as it’s the only way you can hear directly from your mother..There must have been a tremendous amount of controversy surrounding this case in 94, and maybe no one really knew the full truth….The “Sarah” revelation shows us this is someone trying to understand insanity as much as evil in this case, or maybe try to distinguish between the two and maybe see if her Mother was “crazy”, or just a diabolical psychopath…I believe the game, personally, makes it very clear that this person was both suffering from a legitimate mental illness, yet also an extremely evil, homicidal individual who killed for little reason that can be understood…..This is probably the deepest way to interpret this story, but I believe it to be also the most accurate…If you re watch these clips with this in mind (as I just did), you will see all of the subtle hints that were dropped to this effect, especially in interview 7 and I think you’ll find it irrefutable…Once you start looking at it this way, and listen to what she is saying differently, it all comes together..It then also hits you: “I’ve been looking at the same woman the whole time!!” lol..It’s only her words and subtle actions which get us to believe that they are two physically different people..They are not however, but this is the illusion the game so expertly paints for us…This was an absolutely brilliant take on MPD and psychopathology all at once…Excellent..

    1. AppUnwrapper

What about the tattoo and bruise, though? And the Oxford trip where she was in two places at once?

      1. Craig

The story is set in England, where there is no death penalty, so she wouldn’t have been executed.

    2. AppUnwrapper

Btw, I agree that Eve likely killed everyone (except maybe Simon). But I believe they’re twins, not the same person.

Why would Florence even be in the picture if there was no twin? Florence would have to be part of her imagination, and there’d be no reason to kill her if she did exist.

  7. Mike

Ok…..Lets address the tattoo, the bruise, the assumption from the evidence were given that “hannah” was in two places at once, and then Florence……1) The Tattoo: First to wrap our minds around this, we have to understand that “Eve” is fictional, and merely a construct of “Hannah’s” psyche…Therefore nothing she says, does, nor understands herself can be taken with any true credibility…She’s a character (a psychological creation) that’s been fighting to believe in her own existence since her inception, and that can only be accomplished through elaborate rationalization, self story telling, and out right self delusion….It’s very obvious through the narratives that “Eve” is a secondary persona that has taken
backseat to “hannah” in the logistical mental functional theater of their lives, many times in the past…

Hannah has also many times expressed a desire to destroy Eve (kill her, etc) In attempts to become a whole functional single person (really to “kill” her mental illness)..And Eve expresses multiple times that her main modus operandi is always to become “one” with Hannah throughout their existences…Even from her first inceptions when they were children..

This being said, there are obviously times when “Eve” has more control over the flesh and blood Hannah, and vice versa…We see very clearly as the interviews progress that “Eve” is taking more and more control as this situation progresses with the police..Now, taking into account everything we know to be true about “Eve” above, it’s very logical to assume that her statement about the tattoo in question is just another fiction she’s constructed inside that persona to distinguish herself from “Hannah” and to exist…She claims she got the tattoo “8 years ago”..Ok, do we have any supporting evidence of this?? And why does the “tattoo” look very clearly either like a poor “stick on” type (which I think was done intentionally), OR a fresh tattoo?..In that it was just done and still shiny?..

I have many, many tattoos, and I can tell you if that was an 8 year old tattoo? It would not look “shiny” in any capacity…This game definitely had the budget to make the tattoo look older, but they did not…They also allowed it to be very easily interpreted as “fake” to a trained eye (or a good detective)..

If it is actually fake, or a stick on, it’s plausible to assume that when Eve takes over the reigns, not only does she don wigs, dress differently, and wear her hair differently, but she also might put on temporary tattoo’s to firm up her distinctions…If however, the tattoo is recent and new?? Well then, it could be a decision she made impetuously as she took more control, and that’s what were being made to understand…Remember also, VERY important – we never see Hannah, nor “Eve” with or without the tattoo again..The most likely explanation is that the “8 year old tattoo” non sense is yet another lie (as she’s consistently lied, and omitted information to the police up to that point, especially as “Eve”), and as Eve represents Hannah’s more confident, wild, evil and crazy “side”, it’s a symbol that she’s taking over Hannah possibly completely now..Very plausible and fits the MPD, Psychopathic explanation very well..

2)The Bruise: The bruise is easily explainable under this mode of explanation…The way this game is potraying MPD/DPD is that these personas actually interact, fight with, scream at, and possibly even harm each other…Which would equate to “Hannah” punching herself in the face during a fight with “Eve” (Remember “Fight Club” here)..It’s very possible the bruise was a self inflicted injury done by Hannah herself to her own face, during the “fight’ Eve later admits they had..If this is the case, we must notice very clearly that when Hannah first presents with the bruise, she is very played down, hair up, frumpy clothes, bruise readily visible, BUT not so prominent that you even really see it on first glance..You have to look hard to make sure she has a bruise at all…This said, on the next interview with her, not only have I believe 5 more days elapsed, but “Eve” is now taking over Hannah and we can see clearly she has done her hair and make up nicely, is dressed provactively, etc..So, a bruise that was already fading could easily have been covered up by Eve upon her noticing it on her face when the transformation happens with a little cover-up and make up…

This would also again fit with her pattern of differentiating herself from Hannah when she takes control..We cannot discount this possibility..We also have to remember that when “Eve” touches where the bruise was? She touches the wrong side of her face..This would indicate to me that she was looking at the bruise in a mirror while dealing with it, and became disoriented as to where it actually was in the first place, as it was not inflicted on “her” directly..It’s the side you would touch if you had only experienced the bruise through a mirror…Again, very plausible and fits the MPD modality..

    3) Two places at once?: Very simply, the game alludes to this, but as another observant commentor pointed out, we have no timeline to when she was actually in Oxford, as opposed to when the ticket was issued…She as Hannah could of easily gotten the ticket on the way up to Oxford to surprise Simon (let’s say), and then switched over to Eve when she got there, forgetting the ticket entirely because eve didnt get it, Hannah did..All “Eve” remembers is the intimacy and sex with Simon at the Hotel..there are also 10,000 other explanations for what could have happened there which would not include that they are
twins….That item does not discount the MPD theory either…There is simply not information given to us to make any kind of real determination on the ticket situation, unfortuantely..(Again, brilliantly intentional)

    4) Florence: This one can get very deep, or it can be very simple…If Florence was real and was a mid-wife, then it’s very plausible that she had some care over Hannah when she was small…Raising her might be a bit of a stretch, but being that they lived across the street it is very plausible that “Hannah” spent alot of time with her and at her home visiting, playing, maybe being babysat by this woman, we just don’t know..”Eve” seems to have alot of information about her however, and also admits that she cant be sure about most of what she remembers because she was so young…So two ways to look at Florence: Number one, as I stated originally Hannah “split” at a young age into “Eve” for whatever reason, and created “Eve’ is a better way to say it…Eve is representative of Hannah’s Evil self, and is for all intents and purposes what we would classify as a psychotpath…Even at a very young age, as a psychopathic personality, Eve wouldn’t need much of a motive to push Florence down a flight of stairs..We can be left to suppose that she may have become angry at something trivial and reacted homicidally, maybe not even realizing the implications of her actions yet..The point is, there wouldn’t have to be a lot to motivate Eve to do something like this..it could have even been done just to see what would happen (as I’ve also previously pointed out)…I do believe however that Florence was Eve’s first “taste” of the power and maybe the “Rush” of homicide (a rush reported by psychopaths that kill)..

OR…I read a very interesting comment from someone on here who agrees with my MPD theory, and again she had an entire explanation for Florence, her murder by Hannah to free Eve which comes back to all the Fairy Tale commentary (which by the way makes absoultely no sense without the MPD explanation), and hits upon the “actual dead twin” theory as the catalyst for the MPD in the first place..Misplaced guilt, delusion, and certainly the possible misplaced blame of a small child
(associating Florence with her sisters “murder” etc, and seeing her as a “witch” that is keeping another part of herself prisoner, could certainly plausibly account for her pushng her down the stairs given some opportunity)…

OR maybe Florence as you said was just a construct of the Eve personas imagination, and the “killing” of her is figurative in her own construct of reality, because it’s what frees her to go and live in her rightful home, and try to become one with Hannah (herself)..We dont know that Florence existed outside of Eve’s statements, The Hannah persona never mentions her…

In contrast we know damn well that not only Simon had his throat cut for sure, and that Hannah’s parent’s were definitely intentionally poisoned to death as both Hannah and Eve touch on this…Hannah expresses normal “conscience” (I wish I could have done something, if I had only been there..) – While Eve almost seems to express amusement, and a comical type of relief at how dumb the police are for not looking further into it..Florence may well just be a construct of the Eve persona, because remember, she has to have some kind of plausible narative as to why she exists..That’s the nature of a mental illness…Your alter ego in MPD is not going to figure out one day that they arent real..lol..If they do, and you do, youre cured!! lol..The story has to fit and at least be plausible to the psyche of the ill…The Florence story (while ludacris to anyone listening closely), could make sense to a mentally ill MPD offshoot, trying to justify it’s existence..

Either way, Eve “killed” Florence either as a totally delusional act, or physically by harnessing Hannah’s body to do it (as she does with Simon and the parents, and god knows who else..)

Lastlty, look at one very important part of the dialogue as well in regard to Eve’s account of her parents death…Remember at this time Hannah was not living in her parents home any longer, she was living with Simons family..Eve’s own account is that while Hannah was gone she was “left behind” and still living in her parents attic..(???) Really?

Ok, so as a grown woman at this point Eve is 18+, and she’s still hiding out permanently in her parent’s (who dont know she exist by the way) attic, because her sister leaves?? Why in God’s name would she be doing this?? Theyre adults now, why would they need to continue this non sense?? The parents obviously know Hannah has moved out, so what is Eve doing, sneaking around the house hiding and hoping her parents wont see her while she gets food, uses the bathroom, etc, etc??..She admits Hannah was no longer there, so the “clever” (ridiculous) ruse they perpetrated for all those years as children was over…Now Eve tells us she was there by herself, no longer having “Hannah” to switch out with…

That in and of itself is probably the best indication that this is MPD…

    1. AppUnwrapper

      Ok, so a few things.
I’ll admit that my interview with Sam and Viva affected my interpretation a bit. The fact that they both said they don’t personally see more than one clear possibility leaves me to believe that it’s the most obvious narrative, which is the twins — I mean, we are led down that path.
Could they have both lied to me a bit so as not to give it away? Sure.
But Sam also admitted to making some mistakes. So something like a shiny tattoo? I’m willing to assume it might have been an oversight.

Granted, I’ve never had a tattoo. But I thought they would be red if she just got it? It wasn’t there on her arm the day before.

I agree Eve killed all those people but I believe she’s the evil twin. There’s also the second set of fingerprints in the house that the cops couldn’t identify and we could assume was a similar match to Hannah’s, but not exact.

One theory I have about the attic is that their parents weren’t really around that much. They were too poor to afford that fancy dollhouse — maybe they were both working and barely home? That would maybe explain why we’re never told their names. They’re the only characters in the story who we don’t know by name. Even the cat is named. So if they’re hardly home, it’s a lot easier to sneak around.

      1. Mike

Ok..You can take it that way (what they told you), but you are automatically taking their words to mean that the only clear narrative they see is the most simple and obvious….If this were the case the creator would not have felt the need to drop all of the very subtle hints he did that lead an astute observer to conclude that Hannah and Eve are the same person..

There’s just too much there in the narrative that points to that, outside the obvious…I think this story was meant to be a 3 layered thriller, with 2 big “kickers”…First as you watch the clips, you’re supposed to see the one woman and be like “Ok, whats going on here??”..Then youre supposed to come to the realization (which the detectives start to) that they are dealing with 2 different women….Immediately everyone comes to the first conclusion kick, Twins!! One evil and one normal…It’s simple!!…Nope…The third kicker is the last interview (7) when you have to listen very closely to what “Eve” is saying, and kicker three is that you’ve just watched someone with multiple personality disorder transform back and forth before your eyes this whole time (and one of the personas has murdered everyone they’ve ever loved)…That’s the last shocker of the story (and its awesome!!)….

Remember also Sam said very clearly, he did not drop any intentional “Red Herrings”…Meaning if someone is getting an MPD story out of this, then that’s most likely what it is…Twins is the more obvious explanation above the surface…You ARE led down that path, but you are missing the final path he leads you down..It’s just not right out in the open to walk down if you’re not really looking for it…It’s a less mentally travelled path, and it takes some work to get to the entrance..

Now, I may be “personally” adding in the whole bit about psychopathology, BUT even if Sam didn’t intend that aspect, he wrote one of these personas as a psychopath (with a pile of dead bodies under their belt)…It’s the only explanation since MPD’s are not typically or often ever violent killers..So there has to also be another darker, much more sinister personality driver at hand as well…

All that said, you are making excuses to try to make the twin theory make sense as far as the parents…Sorry, but there’s no way to justify a grown woman perfectly able to live a real normal life, “choosing” to hide up in her parents attic (parents who don’t know she exists or know of her and think they are living alone) – and continuing hiding for absolutely no reason..

Why in Gods name would “Eve” have not just revealed herself to her parents if she was a real person?? Why would her and Hannah have continued this crazy rouse on the parents even into adulthood?? Would Eve not want to finally at some point have her own separate relationship with her own parents outside Hannah (if she could, which she cant)?? Let them know her and love her too?? Its not as if she did anything wrong where she had to hide out right?? Her parents would have been overjoyed, shocked and probably falling all over themselves with love and surprise that they had another daughter all this time…Think about it…And then rather than to just come out and expose herself, she extend this whole thing into actually living in their attic as an adult unbeknowest to them?? lol..Come on now….

Not even to mention that rather than to just tell them whats going on and who she is, she poisons them to death for no reason instead?? No…lol

Eve was “put away” back in the attic after the marriage by Hannah, who wanted to have a normal marriage with a man she loved, outside the “attic” and outside her imaginary “friend” (as she calls her herself “friend”)..

Except that her imaginary friend from childhood was a lot more than that, it was a split off faction of her persona, which probably began to gain a lot more control of her than she even realized, the disorder taking more and more hold through the years…Nevertheless Hannah tries to “stow” away “Eve” after the marriage, and well beyond reasons of not wanting to “share” Simon…It’s a lot deeper than that..”Eve” couldn’t leave the “attic” on her own at that point, because she didn’t exist outside the “Hannah” flesh and blood body..And if “Hannah” takes control of the body, Eve is trapped in the Attic…Thinking about this a little more, the “Attic” may just be a metaphor for “up in Hannah’s head”…Hmmmm…Very deep..

You’re not seeing this because you’re clinging to the most obvious answer (which I believe you think the creators gave you, but they didn’t..)..If you drop that thought modality, you will see this as a much richer, much deeper, and far more darker (and sadder) story. To me if this was a story about two twins, it wouldn’t have half the depth or be anywhere near as good…

        1. AppUnwrapper

It’s funny. I just went through my old emails with Sam. A few minutes into playing, I thought it was split personality. Then I thought “or maybe twins.”

I agree, it didn’t make sense that she never told her parents she exists. That part does bother me. But there are holes in both stories.

Man…we need those detective questions! I think we might be debating this till the end of time otherwise.

If you look at my other post where there are over 700 comments, I went back and forth so many times. So many questions with either scenario, so it’s hard to commit to one!

And I do acknowledge that both Sam and Viva could have been misleading me in their interviews, since it was by email and they could think through their responses. But that’s just a little bit evil. 😛

          1. Mike

Well regardless its a great debate and an incredible game…I love things that make you think this much, definitely not enough of that in the world today..

As far as Sam and Viva, remember: Controversy creates “Buzz”…Buzz then creates “Sales”…Sales are the name of the game…It would behoove them not to “lie to you” exactly, but help keep the “mystique” alive subtly….And as you can see, It’s working!! lol…

“Sam also said there were no intentional red herrings, but I guess that could have been a red herring. :/’ – LOL..Yup…Remember, Sam is a genius…You are “through the looking glass” when you’re talking to him ; )

            1. AppUnwrapper

Yeah, I mean… I played it over a month ago and am still discussing it. Never got so invested in a game before.

Speaking of sales… It’s sold 100,000 copies… So we need 900,000 more to get Wind and Rain recorded. 😛

              1. Mike

100,000 in less than 3 months?? Pretty impressive…I wonder that the budget was for this game….

With the amount of buzz out there, 1 million is def possibly : )

                1. AppUnwrapper

Actually, less than 2 months. But the hype is dying down I think, so it may take a while. 🙁

        2. Yalena

I concur with the MPD explanation. As Eve says in the 7th interview: “Hannah insisted the attic be left as it was dollhouse and all. Simon never went up there.” Doesn’t make sense for Simon never going to the attic!

          1. AppUnwrapper

I think Adrian’s 40,000+ word analysis (linked at the bottom of my other page) convinced me its MPD. There are still holes, but it does make a lot of sense.

    2. AppUnwrapper

Sam also said there were no intentional red herrings, but I guess that could have been a red herring. :/

    3. Jimmy

Wow, what a game! And Mike you are so spot on ! great insight in “her story” and it is also my personal view of this story! The first impression i got from all these interview parts were: “multiple persona disorder”, i mean when i say that clip where she said to herself: “why are you talking about eve?” and that strange behavior afterwards with the head on the table, knocking on the table with some code, and then that strange face when she goes back from one persona to the other? It was for me the most obvious sign it was MPD. There were also, like you mentioned, some more subtle hints throughtout the clips. The whole twins interpretation is misleading, it WANTS you to believe it’s two different persons, but the idea of a person who is able to switch between 2 different characters is more creepy and mysterious and shocking! I’ve been reading a lot of discussions here, its so great to hear everyone’s view on this! Put i will stick to my interpretation cause i like it best;)

      1. AppUnwrapper

Every time I start to come over to the MPD side, something pulls me back to twins. But I think both theories still battle it out in my head. 😉

        1. Jimmy

Actually i have second thoughts after seeing all the interviews after each other! Even though i really like the thought of MPD, i’m now pretty convinced it’s twins.. the 7th interview is so clear, Eve confessing everything about how they worked with each other and pulled it off… in fact MPD wasn’t even on my mind during that long interview. You could ask some questions regarding the whereabouts of Hannah (she’s gone), and the mentioning of “you have nothing, and all these stories we’ve been telling each other.. they’re just stories” are a bit weird… Would she imply that she was just making it up? She passed the lie detector, so she didnt murder Simon, she lied about her name, also the rehearsals of several dialogues , asking the detective twice each day if the video was recording… all evidence they are twins… the MPS is too far streched and too little evidence to back up. Did she kill hannah too like she killed her parents? I mean it was obvious she killed Hannah’s parents because she wanted Hannah and Simon back in the house… she also killed the mid-wife to be with Hannah.. so it would make sence to kill Hannah herself to raize the baby alone because Hannah was very angry about her being pregnant of Simon. Is she making it up Hannah killed Simon? that part we’ll never know, it’s very possible she lied about that because she also didnt admit she murdered hannah’s parents too.

          1. AppUnwrapper

            Reading the transcript also helps.
I still lean towards twins, but willing to entertain the MPD theory.

  8. nova.

Thanks so much for the videos and the analysis. I must say this ‘game’ made me more confused as I continued playing it. During the first couple of hours, I was definitely sure it was MPD, then the more I went into it I started thinking they’re twins. Now at the end I think the most plausible conclusion is she has MPD and that Eve is a sneaky weasel

    1. AppUnwrapper

      🙂
I went from MPD to twins within the first few minutes playing! I think I’m now at MPD, but it makes me sad. As twins, they actually had a chance of getting away with it. But now I can’t see that last clip as anything other than Eve realizing she’s not going free.

  9. nova.

The only reason it took me hours to get to that conclusion was because I was so confused when I started the game lol.
Eve is soo manipulative she actually made me feel for her even though she’s a horrible person.

    1. AppUnwrapper

Same! She’s so likable despite everything. I really wanted her to go free. Now that “please” in the very last clip is just heart wrenching.

  10. nova.

Okay, I’ve gone back and listened to the final parts of interview 7 a couple of times and I can’t see what everyone sees when she says ‘please’. I don’t think she means it/ has only just realised that she’s been caught. I think she knew the detectives were on to her before that and that’s why she started to sort of defend herself -to soften the blow if she indeed gets caught when she started saying that Hannah “only meant to scare him off” when she swung the mirror at Simon. By the time she says “please” and asks for a lawyer she comes across as someone who can’t be arsed anymore and just wants to get things over with. (it’s hard for me to read her 🙁 )

    1. AppUnwrapper

Someone pointed out that that’s the first time she asks for a lawyer, that all the other times she says she doesn’t need one. That perhaps the detectives said something right before that last clip to make her worry, where before she was confident she’d get away with it all. Adrian’s analysis is what got me thinking that way (I linked to it at the bottom, I think). He analyzed every line in the game and it really got me thinking. I mean, there are holes in every scenario, but I see why he went went with MPD in the end.

One thing that does still bother me is that their parents are never named. And it makes me wonder if they were just not around much. But he gives another reason for it. So….I dunno.

Part of me wants to watch the whole damn game again, but I don’t have time! I’ve been wanting to listen to Serial and that’s 12 hours long!

  11. nova.

I’ve opened the link to to Adrian’s analysis and that shit is long af. I probably won’t be able to read it well because it’s waay past midnight and I’m sure if I read it in bed I’ll sleep :p …
Yeah it bothers me too. It’s clearly a message by the game developers because even the irrelevant cat has a name haha. But whatever the reason is, I prefer guessing and being kept in the dark to getting told the reasons. It’s what makes this game interesting -everyone can come to their own conclusions without being wrong/right.

    1. AppUnwrapper

Well, Adrian is still speculating as much as any of us. He just did a lot more research. So his word isn’t final — he’s not the developer. But it did make me think a lot about my own interpretations. I missed some nuances that he pointed out. Definitely not good to read when you’re trying to go to sleep. But it is worth reading!

    2. AppUnwrapper

Btw, he read all the hundreds of comments on my other page, as well as anything else he could find on the game. He did some serious research.

  12. Jakob

I liked both your and Adrian’s analysis (although I think most of the fairy stories in Adrian’s post are coincidences).
My first guess after finishing the game was the MPD theory, but I wasn’t fully convinced because my wife insists on the twins). After watching the full ordered interviews again on youtube, the twin story seemed convincing at first, because the twin story is what eve tells in the last interview. So if you wanted to believe eve, this would be an obvious explanation.
However, in retrospective, the way she talks about her life (florence, attic) and what she says is just like listening to a fairy tale and not like a story that really happened.
So at the moment I support the MPD theory.
Mainly because of the unrealistic attic-hiding-story and her confidence in the end, when she says that hannah is gone for good.
I really hope the detective questions and/or the official story as it was intended by the author will be released.

  13. muisek

May be i’m a bit too late to the party, but i hope this would be somehow useful for Mike Sett, and for AppUnwrapper in particular.
Both of you should definetly read “The Minds of Billy Milligan” by Daniel Keyes (no one mentioned it, so i guess haven’t heard about it, could be wrong).
Thats a biographical non-fiction novel, which i can assure you will help understand some of the inconsistencies of “Her Story”.

    Best regards.

    1. AppUnwrapper

Thanks for the recommendation! Will check it out. 🙂

  14. Jim

If the angle of the story is based on mpd thrn this is a cheap lazy effort. For one there is no such thing. The DSM removed mpd in volume IV then put it back in in volume V but amended the definition. The tired idea of someone being two different people is pure fiction. This games junk. Lazy development team.
