My Week Unwrapped: January 21, 2017

Welcome back to another installment of My Week Unwrapped, where I discuss all the games I’ve been playing this past week. It’s been a puzzle-heavy week, which is just how I like it!

First off, I got to play Accidental Queens’ A Normal Lost Phone ahead of release. It comes out this week, January 26th, and you can read more about it here. I also made a short video preview below, but I didn’t show too much since I don’t want to spoil the story. But it’s another smartphone-alike, a genre I really love seeing more of. I’m working on a full review that should be ready for the game’s release.

I’ve also been thoroughly enjoying Maboyz’ level-based puzzler called Heart At Hack. It’s another game that tries to mimic a smart device, but this time it’s from the future, in the year 20134. The story is told through text messages, emails, and a very dirty-minded Oracle. This is not a game for kids, as there is some mature content. The way the puzzles work into the game is that you’re solving them in order to hack into your girlfriend’s phone because you suspect she’s cheating on you. I do have a few issues with the game — mainly its slow startup to get back to the puzzle I was working on. But I’m absolutely loving the puzzles themselves. I already completed fifty of them, though I’m a bit stumped at the moment on level 51. You can see my walkthrough here and make sure to download the game, as it’s 100% free with no ads or IAPs.

Like I said, it’s been a very puzzle-heavy week. So next up is Red’s Kingdom by Cobra Mobile Limited. It’s an open world puzzle adventure that’s perfectly designed for touch screens and highly polished from what I’ve played so far. If you like block-sliding puzzles where you slide a piece around the board until it lands in the goal, you should be really happy with this one. But even if you’re not a fan of those, Red’s Kingdom has so much charm and such a big world that you might not even notice all you’re doing is swiping to roll a little squirrel around rooms. It also has tons of save points, and you can easily restart back at one if you need to. The only thing it’s really missing for a mobile-friendly game is iCloud sync, because it’s the type you want to play on your iPad, but if you do so you won’t be able to play on the go with your iPhone. I’m only a little over an hour into it and I’ve just started encountering levers that pop a block up temporarily, so you have to run to them quickly. That is becoming a bit frustrating for me, but I’m hoping it won’t be too frequent, as I much prefer the relaxed pace of the game. New elements are gradually introduced to keep things interesting, so I’m excited to see what’s in store. If you’re still not sure if the game is for you, check out the two gameplay videos I made.

And last, I played through doublespeak games’ Super Gridland a couple of times. I’d never played the original flash game before, but I’m a big fan of match-three puzzlers, so I was excited to play. It’s basically a survival game in which you match and collect resources during the day and then fight enemies at night. As you can see in the first video below, I was completely lost and didn’t understand the game at all. I thought it was in real time and that I had to make matches quickly. But it’s actually turn-based. I also had no idea what most of the tiles at night did, so I kept dying easily. But once I understood the game better, I was able to beat it a couple of times. I did enjoy my time with it, but I don’t see much pull to continue playing, even with the New Game+ mode. Without some sort of high score board to keep track of my stats, I don’t see the point in beating the game again. If you’re interested in checking it out, though, my second video explains things a bit, but it also spoils the ending. The third video is basically just the ending, so only watch that if you really don’t mind the spoilers.

And that’s it for this week! I hope you pick up some of these games and, if you do, let me know what you think of them in the comments below!

And if you made it this far, I have one extra iOS code for a free copy of Gunhouse. The first person to ask for it with a valid email address in the comments section will get it! (Update: The code is gone!)
