Last Inua is a supernatural 2D puzzle platformer set the the snowy Arctic. You control two different characters that have different abilities, which you have to use to solve puzzles and continue along the path. Ataataq, the strong father, is helping his weak son Hiko on a journey to the three temples and keepers to save the land from an ancient demon named Tonrar. Ataataq can jump, break walls, push boulders and climb ice, all of which Hiko is unable to do. Therefore, a simple puzzle may involve Ataataq going ahead on his own and breaking all obstacles in Hiko’s way so Hiko can meet up with him.

But in case you think Hiko is just dead weight, he’s not. He may be weak in body, but he has magical abilities such as teleflying and making snow bridges. While teleflying only saves his own skin, his ability to make snow bridges often saves his father as well. The two must use teamwork to survive both the elements and the supernatural creatures out to get them. Alone they would perish, but together they stand a chance.

The controls are pretty tight, with only the occasional problem. The left side has a virtual joystick, while the right side has an action button, depending on what action you have available to you. You swap between characters by tapping on their icons above the directional pad. Hiko’s magical snow bridge ability works by touching and dragging the glowing white light across a space to create the bridge. Special abilities are not always available, so that makes puzzles a bit easier. If you see you have access to a certain ability, there’s a very good chance that you need to use it. While I have hit a couple of small glitches that led to death, they didn’t prevent me from completing the game, so they’re very minor. The controls could use a bit of work, but for the most part, deaths were due to my own mistakes and I was able to correct them on the next try.

My first reaction when I started playing was that the movement is a bit slow. But once I got used to it, it didn’t bother me too much. You are running through snow, after all. The game is very realistic in this aspect, and also in that you can get frostbite and die in some sections if you’re away from a fire for too long. In addition to frostbite, there are a number of dangers to deal with, including expanding black holes, crumbling platforms, zombies and yetis. Everything is out to kill you, so there are many creative ways you can die. I even accidentally used Ataataq to crush Hiko with a boulder. Oops!

While this is a puzzle game at heart, it is also a platformer and involves some heart-pumping sections that require quick thinking and movement. Puzzle fans should enjoy this game, but be aware it’s not necessarily a relaxing game. Sometimes there will be some sort of creature out for your blood, so you can’t take your sweet time. It also may take a death or two to realize the solution to a puzzle. Sure, it can be frustrating at times, but it isn’t a big deal, as there are plenty of quick save points. As long as you don’t mind a bit of trial and error, you should enjoy playing Last Inua.

Visually, this game is a masterpiece. There are so many little things going on in the background, that I’m sure I missed some of them while focused on not dying. During some intense parts of the game, Tonrar’s face will flash like lightning, which is a really nice touch. From the snow falling to the enemies you’ll encounter, everything is simply gorgeous. If visuals are important to you in a game, you definitely want to check this one out.

My main complaint is that you can’t go back and play a level over again just for fun. Your only option is to play the whole game through and then start over from the beginning. It’s such a gorgeous game with some interesting puzzles and sights that I wouldn’t mind being able to play over again at my own discretion. However, this is a minor issue and it just speaks to how great the game is, that I want to play parts of it over.

Thank you for the review, we at Glowforth really enjoyed it! You really caught the essence of the game! We specially liked that you understood why the characters don’t run fast – in the snow it is not that easy. 🙂

If their running speed had prevented me from completing the game, then I might have had an issue with it. But the rest of the game was paced appropriately. That’s not to say I didn’t have my share of deaths…but it never got frustrating enough that I felt like quitting. 🙂
Thanks for creating such a beautiful game. Excited to see what you come up with next!
