My Week Unwrapped: November 12, 2016

Hi everyone, welcome to the latest installment of My Week Unwrapped, where I talk about the games I’ve been playing lately. My week started off very enthusiastic, as I got addicted to the surprisingly amazing puzzle game, YANKAI’S TRIANGLE, by Kenny Sun. However, a few hours after I wrote my review for it, we learned who our next president is. I’ve not been able to focus too well on games since then, so it’s been a pretty quiet week on my site. But there were some strong releases, so I’ll cover the ones I’ve had a chance to try.

First, here’s my review for Kenny Sun’s YANKAI’S TRIANGLE. It’s a simple and relaxing, but somehow addictive puzzle game with an infinite number of levels. I’ve played almost 400 levels and I’m not tired of it. I’ve even added it to the top twenty-five of my Recommended games list and it will likely be one of the games of the year picks. It’s hard to explain why, but definitely read my review and watch the video I made below.

I’m also really enjoying this little puzzle game called Rookfall, by Michael Bunger. The goal of each level is to slide the rook in straight lines around the board, eventually covering all the tiles. But what separates it from other similar games I’ve played is that the piece isn’t on the board when you start, and the game doesn’t tell you where it should end. You have to figure out both the starting and ending position. It seems simple at first, but gets quite challenging. If you like tricky but relaxing puzzle games, definitely check it out. You can see some gameplay in my video below.

Next, I played some of the turn-based strategy game, Steamworld Heist, by Image & Form International. I’ve only spent a short time with it so far, but I like what I’ve seen. Check out my video to see what it’s like.

I’ve also spent some time with the upcoming game about surveillance called Replica, by SOMI. It releases on November 15th and I have enjoyed what I played so far. Unfortunately, there’s no save state, so I have to start over and play through it in one sitting before I can give it a proper recommendation. Hopefully I’ll have more to say about it after its release. For now, you can see some gameplay video I made.

And last, I started playing Demon’s Rise 2: Lords of Chaos by Wavelight Games. It’s another turn-based tactical RPG, and is very impressive visually. It’s going to take more time for me to explore all its intricacies, but if you like strategy games with fairly long play sessions and lots of variety, give it a try.

And that’s it for this week’s My Week Unwrapped! I’m sorry it wasn’t that busy, but I hope you still find some good games from it. And next week should hopefully have more. If you’re a developer who wants me to feature your game next week, feel free to email me. As long as I’m enjoying it, I’ll mention it here. Until next time!
