My Week Unwrapped: April 1, 2017

Hi everyone! I’m back again a day late wit My Week Unwrapped because it been really busy finishing up reviews and walkthroughs. Because of that, I didn’t play too many games this week, but they were good ones.

I finally finished my second play-through Night School Studio’s supernatural adventure game, OXENFREE. I found it very worthwhile to play it again, as I missed a lot of things my first time. Also, things change on the second play-through, so it felt different enough that I didn’t feel like I was just wasting my time. You can see my videos here and my review here. The gist of it is that I highly recommend it, as the artwork, atmosphere, music and voice acting all come together to make a very enjoyable experience.

I’ve also been very busy with State of Play Games’ colorful puzzler, KAMI 2. I never really got into the first one and this one also feels pretty repetitive after a while. But I’ve almost finished the current content as well as my walkthrough. It would have been nice to have an undo button for the levels with higher move counts. But it’s a game that’s completely free, only charging you for hints or theme packs if you want them early. It would have been nice to have a way to skip puzzles without using hints, but I guess they have to make their money somehow! There’s also a level creator if you want to try your hand at that. Any puzzle fans should definitely download it and give it a try. There’s nothing to lose, even if it isn’t your cup of tea.

I finally completed Spelkraft’s Pan-Pan, along with my walkthrough. It’s a thoroughly enjoyable open world puzzle game that stresses exploration and experimentation. It has a ton of charm, and I really liked how you unlock new areas by gaining access to new items like a stick or a vial that can store a mysterious essence you get from certain plants. There are creatures to meet and the puzzles have enough variety to them that nothing felt like filler. It’s not a long game, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. My only real gripe with it was that it’s in portrait mode on both iPhone and iPad, even though it was ported from PC, which was obviously in landscape mode. I spent a lot of time just trying to find my way because you can only see a tiny section of the map at a time. It was nice being able to play with one hand on my iPhone, but it would have been even nicer to have a choice. As long as that doesn’t bother you too much, I would recommend picking it up for a couple of hours of solid exploration and puzzling.

I also played through the third and final season of Star Billions by Catch & Release. Once again, the crew of the Little Brother provides both humor and genuine wisdom through its cast of AIs and aliens. And once again, the experience is marred by forced breaks every few minutes. I had this complaint from the very beginning of the first season, and nothing has really changed. I still really like the story and characters, but every time I was pulled away from it, it was off my mind. Instead of just sitting down and playing through the story in a couple of hours, I got it in bits and pieces and forgot the details in between. If the real-time playing didn’t bother you for the first two seasons, then you should be fine this time around. If you like the mini games more than I do, that will also help you pass the time. If you decide to play, the developer gave me a cheat code to share that allows you to skip one timer per day. Try tapping the character buttons in this order when you’re waiting for the clock to count down: 1-1-3-2-3-4. Also, try this while playing Astro Whiz: 3-3-3-1-4-2.

And last, I finally completed Rusty Lake’s ninth surreal and creepy room escape game, Cube Escape: The Cave. The second half was not as enjoyable as the first half for me, but it still had solid puzzles. The game is free, so definitely try it, but first play the other games in the series! And if you’re stuck, I made a very detailed walkthrough guide.

And that’s everything for this week! I’ll be back next week with more, as I’m still catching up from the last month’s craziness, as well as new games releasing each week. I hope you found some good games here and let me know what you’re playing!

I cannot understand the app store download links. Sometimes it works but sometimes it redirects to another website 🙁
