My Week Unwrapped: April 24, 2018 – Oddmar, Stray Cat Doors, Friday the 13th Killer Puzzle, Fobia and More

Hi everyone and welcome back to My Week Unwrapped, where I regale you with tales of my misdeeds over the last seven days. Nah, I’m just gonna tell you what games I’ve been playing. Much of my time has been playing a platformer, which is out of character for me. But if you’re here just for the puzzles and adventure games, fret not, as there are plenty of those, too. So let’s not waste anymore time and get right to it!

Oddmar

Mobge’s Oddmar is the platformer I was referring to above, a game I was a little worried about playing since it looked like something I would normally ragequit early on. It’s just such a gorgeous game that I had to give it a try even with my reservations. It turns out, I had some trouble with it here and there and almost quit just halfway through. But I stuck with it and had a lot of fun. Platformers are still not my favorite genre, but I’m glad I gave Oddmar a chance. You can read my full review here to see if it’s something you might enjoy.

Stray Cat Doors

I missed Stray Cat Doors when it first released about a month ago, but I like cats and it looked promising, so I gave it a go. It’s actually a pretty solid room escape game that takes place over six separate stages. The goal in each one is to use items and solve puzzles to get all the puzzle pieces so you can unlock the door and get to the cat. It starts off easy, but the puzzles do get trickier as you progress. It’s also completely free, but there’s banner ads at the top of the screen that can’t be removed. They’re a little distracting, but at least there’s no forces video ads. Instead, there are optional ones you can watch if you need a hint. Or, you can use my step-by-step walkthrough guide. In any case, I recommend downloading it and giving it a try.

Friday the 13th Killer Puzzle

I’m still making my way through Friday the 13th Killer Puzzle, as there’s quite a bit of content. Right now, my walkthrough is complete through episode 5, and I even added a step-by-step guide for those who don’t want to watch the videos. I’m working on episode 6 and should hopefully have that ready this week

Fobia

I was bored with Eugene Lazebny’s Fobia within the first few seconds of playing. You’re mostly running in a straight line for a while and very little happens. Occasionally you have to jump over a gap or spikes or push a crate to climb up on it. But mostly, you’re just running. And when you’re jumping, the controls don’t feels too great. The girl’s jumps are very short, and after playing a game like Oddmar, it just felt so much worse. The obstacles aren’t all that interesting from what I’ve played so far, and the game feels like a second-rate rip-off of Playdead’s Limbo and Inside. At $4.99, I cant recommend it at all. You’re much better off picking up Playdead’s games, and even if you’re looking for more like those, this is not the one. I like the visuals, but everything else about it is just not worth your time or money. It’s possible it gets better later, but you’d have to play through some boring slog to get there if the better part even exists.

Still Here

David Smit’s Still Here is actually releasing this week on April 26th, so I won’t say too much about it here. I do have some gameplay video if you want to see what it’s like. I haven’t spent enough time with it yet to give many impressions, but it does feel different. It might be geared more towards kids, but I learned the hard way that you can die and you only have one life per level. So while it does seem easy at first, messing up does have consequences. Anyway, I’ll let you watch the video and hopefully I’ll have more to say about it after it releases.

Granny

I really don’t have much to say about this one. It’s poorly made, and I could pretty much tell from the screenshots, but I was curious since it was near the top of the charts for a while. I lost interest after a few minutes, especially when going to the menu set off a 30-second video ad. I don’t recommend it, but if you want to give it a try, by all means go ahead.

And that’s everything I’ve been playing this week! Thanks for reading this far and I hope to see you back here next time with more of My Week Unwrapped!
