The Elder Scrolls: Blades – Walkthrough Guide, Tips & Tricks

The Elder Scrolls: Blades
By: Bethesda

The Elder Scrolls: Blades is still in early access, but for those who are able to play, I thought I’d make a guide with some tips and tricks. Most things are pretty straightforward, but a few things can be confusing. So I’ll try to clear them up here. If you need any extra help or have some tips if your own to offer, feel free to do so in the comments section.

Tips & Tricks:

– The game can be played in either portrait or landscape mode. It’s tap-to-move in portrait, but there’s an invisible floating joystick in landscape mode. I find the joystick more comfortable for movement on my iPad, then just tap to interact with items and people.

– The game is not really open world, but you do have freedom of movement. You can walk around your town (which you need to rebuild), but can’t just walk outside the gates. You need to select one of your quests from the menu to go exploring, and you’ll be limited to that dungeon.

– Look around for glowing objects, as they’re either food, loot, jars you can break for loot, levers that open doors, etc.

– Most of your gear will be found in chests, which are on timers. You can pick up a certain number of chests (my current max is 10), but can only unlock one at a time. The most basic are only 5 seconds, but if you have a silver chest in middle of its 3-hour timer, you won’t be able to open the 5-second chests without using a gem. It’s dumb and annoying and makes no sense, as you’re running around the dungeon carrying ten chests? Uhhh ok. Anyway, this is a F2P game, so I guess that’s what we have to live with.

– Some quests have secret areas to find. You can see if there are any secrets by opening the quest description in the menu. Secrets are usually hidden behind a locked gate or secret wall. For instance, one involved pulling a lever to open a gate. Another had a chain I pulled, which caused a wall to open up. Just be on the lookout for anything that sticks out and make sure to explore every nook and cranny.

– Battles are fairly bland. They’re one-on-one close combat, so you can’t sneak up on enemies or pick them off from afar. If an enemy gets near you, it will initiate combat.

– You tap and hold to attack. You want to release your finger when the circle is big. You should also use your shield to block enemy attacks. But you want to press the Shield icon right before the enemy attacks you. That will stun them, allowing you to get more attacks in.

– Animals like rats and wolves are a bit different. You have to wait for them to lunge at you, or your attacks will miss. But early on, at least, one hit will kill them.

– Once you level up and are able to learn spells and abilities, make sure to EQUIP the abilities you learn. Once you do, a button will appear for them on the screen during battle.

– Make sure to complete the Meet the Old Bladesmaster quest as soon as you get it. For some reason, it has three skulls, making it seem like a more difficult quest. But it’s just a combat tutorial that will teach you about blocking properly.

– If you’re having trouble with a story quest, you can earn XP and items either in the Abyss or look for side quests on the Job Board.

– Your gear has its own health meter. Make sure to visit the smithy to repair any weapons or armor you care about.

– I’ll add more tips as I think of them!
