My Week Unwrapped: October 14, 2022 – The Past Within Lite, Undecember, Torchlight Infinite, Yestertide and More

Hi everyone, and welcome back to My Week Unwrapped, where I discuss all the games I’ve been playing over the last seven days. Once again I spent most of my time catching up on the newest Genshin content, but there were some other big releases this week that I made some room for. The most exciting for me was the demo for the upcoming co-op game, The Past Within, though I was also pleasantly surprised by Undecember. There’s a fair amount to discuss, so let’s dig in.

The Past Within Lite

Ever since I played Tick Tock: A Tale for Two, I’ve been desperately hoping more co-op puzzle games would release. Rusty Lake, the developers of the well-known Cube Escape series, have answered my prayers and have been working on a game called The Past Within. It’s not releasing until November, but they just published the demo version on mobile so we can get a taste of it. The way it works is that you play with a friend either in the same room or over the phone and you each have your own copy of the game. One player is in the past and the other is in the future and you need to communicate with each other what you’re seeing. The demo is very short and on the easy side, but was still enjoyable. I do hope the full release has less hand-holding, but in any case I’m looking forward to it. I don’t have a video of the demo because it’s hard to make one for these kinds of games. But I do have a walkthrough guide for anyone who needs help with any of the puzzles.

Undecember

Undecember is a free-to-play action RPG that reminds me a lot of Titan Quest. I only spent about an hour with it so far, but I already like it more than Diablo Immortal or Torchlight: Infinite. I’m not sure I have room in my life for another F2P live service game, considering how dedicated I am to Genshin Impact, but I’m at least willing to give it some more time. The environments are not as dark as Diablo’s and the variety of skills feels fun to use. I also don’t know yet how the monetization will affect the game. There are a lot of menus and I’m just trying to play the game without spending all my time in those menus. If I play more, I’ll be sure to give updated impressions, but if you have any interest in the game I recommend just trying it for yourself.

Torchlight: Infinite

I’ve never played any Torchlight games so I have nothing to compare this one to, but Torchlight: Infinite just didn’t do much for me. The graphics look cartoony at best and muddled at worst. I can barely tell what I’m looking at half the time because the environments are so cluttered. I found Undecember far easier to read and less bothersome on my eyes. I’m also just not a fan of the writing or the way all the characters have 2D static images when they talk. I was also disappointed that, out of five classes to choose from, one one was female. The whole experience just felt very underwhelming to me and I didn’t enjoy it much at all. I doubt I’ll be returning for more, but I recommend watching some of my video below before deciding for yourself whether to try it.

Yestertide

Yestertide is a science fiction point-and-click adventure releasing on October 31st. I got an early copy of it and played about twenty minutes until I got stumped. I like the whole atmosphere, as you’re stuck on an island that isn’t usually easily accessible. A lot of strange things are going on and there’s a whole mystery to unravel. I am finding it tricky, but hopefully I can still get through it without resorting to hints. If you want to see what it’s like and don’t mind spoilers, you can watch some of my gameplay video below. There’s no pre-order link, but I’ll be sure to let you know when the game is available to purchase.

Blackthorn Castle 2

Blackthorn Castle 2 is not a new game, but it is currently on sale for free. I realized that I never finished playing it, so I picked it up again today and continued working on my walkthrough guide. I plan to work on it more over the weekend, so be sure to check back if you’re stuck on any puzzles.

Genshin Impact

And last, I spent a lot more time exploring the Sumeru desert in Genshin Impact. I like that there’s a lot underneath the desert, but all the running in circles has been giving me motion sickness. So I’ve had to pace myself. I also finally played through Cyno’s story quest just before his banner ended. Nilou’s banner starts tonight but I won’t be playing again till tomorrow. I also have no plans to pull for her because I’m saving for other characters. The plan is to slowly use the next two weeks to try and complete the desert so I have as many primogems as possible for the 3.2 update.

And that’s everything I’ve been up to this week. I also watched the miniseries, Devs, which was interesting but also very pretentious. I started The Midnight Club now, which feels aimed at a younger audience, but I’m still enjoying it enough to stick with it for now. I like how almost every episode has a different scary story told by one of the teens. Anyway, let me know in the comments section which games you’re playing and I’ll see you back here next time with more of My Week Unwrapped.
