My Week Unwrapped: August 30, 2024 – The Darkside Detective 2, Vampire The Masquerade – Shadows of New York, Ocean Keeper and More

Hi everyone, and welcome back to My Week Unwrapped, where I discuss all the games I’ve been playing over the last seven days. Once again, this is actually covering two weeks because I didn’t really play enough last week to warrant its own roundup. There’s also a huge new update in Genshin Impact, so expect that to dominate a lot of my time over the next few weeks. There’s still a lot to discuss, so let’s get to it.

The Darkside Detective 2: A Fumble in the Dark

I finished The Darkside Detective, and really enjoyed it so I jumped immediately into the sequel, A Fumble in the Dark. The first case is a spoiler for the end of the original game, so I won’t discuss its content. But from the two cases I’ve played so far, I’ve noticed that this game appears to be much longer. Instead of a half hour for each case, I spent 1.5 hours on the first case and another hour for the second. I plan to play more, and would highly recommend it to anyone who likes humorous point-and-click adventures.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Shadows of New York

Not too long ago, Vampire: The Masquerade – Coteries of New York (CoNY) released on iOS and I played through it despite knowing nothing about the series. I liked it enough to stick with it to the end, and I do feel now that I know more about the world it takes place in. So when the sequel, Shadows of New York, released about a week ago, I was eager to give it a try. It seems to be its own story, so you don’t need to play CoNY first. But I’m not sure I’m going to stick with it. It hasn’t really grabbed me after an hour with it and I think I just don’t really like the main character. I might still go back to it on a week where I have less to play, but for now it’s not drawing me back. I recommend watching some of my gameplay videos if you want to see what it’s like.

Ocean Keeper: Dome Survival

I covered Ocean Keeper a few weeks back when it was still in pre-release. It took a while for it to finally come to iOS and, unlike the Android version, it’s fully premium. I started a new game and spent a few hours with it and have been enjoying myself more after unlocking more skills, like the bomb for mining and the turret for defense. I still find the grind a bit tiresome, since the only thing that you keep from each run is the gold you earn. It doesn’t feel great to have to start from scratch every time with all but a few upgrades. I’ll probably spend more time with it, but I’m not sure how long I’ll stick with it. Also, I’m pretty sure that they copied the idea from Dome Keeper (which isn’t on iOS) and then named it Ocean Keeper: Dome Survival to keep those keywords in the name. Make of that what you will. And again, I recommend watching some of my videos before deciding whether to purchase.

The Darkside Detective

Like I said, I completed The Darkside Detective now and thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s one of those games where I want to tap on everything to see every line of dialogue because it’s so entertaining. The puzzles are on the easy side, so this is a game you play more for the story and dialogue than for the puzzles. But the overall experience was great and I look forward to playing more of the sequel.

Vampire Survivors

After the recent Vampire Survivors update, I decided to start working on beating the Adventures that give bonus skins for certain characters. I already unlocked Poe’s by completing A Garlic Paradise and am still working on completing World of Light and Dark. It’s proving a lot more difficult and I took a break after spending way too much time trying to kill the Ender and failing to do so. I also need to unlock more Darkanas eventually. It’s nice knowing I have some Vanpire Survivors content to work through whenever the mood strikes.

Genshin Impact

And last, the 5.0 update finally arrived in Genshin Impact, bringing with it the new nation, Natlan. This area has dragon-like creatures called Saurians that have special abilities and you can take control of them to mimic those abilities. I’m loving having this new area to explore with new mechanics. I especially love all the new animals, like llamas and capybaras that we can catch and put in our teapots. The music and scenery are also top-notch. I’m going to take my time with it so I can savor it. If you haven’t played Genshin in a while, I highly recommend coming back for this.

And that’s everything I’ve been up to these last two weeks. I also watched the second season of Outer Range and am really disappointed that it ended without any resolution, since it wasn’t renewed for another season. Oh well. I also watched the movie Wicked Little Letters, which was great fun. And I saw Sing Sing in theaters, and I was surprised to learn that the actors were all playing themselves. I’m now watching Kevin Can F**k Himself and it reminds me a lot of Dead to Me. It’s a fun show and I’m sad I’m almost done with it. Anyway, let me know in the comments section which games you’re playing and I’ll see you back here next time with more of My Week Unwrapped!
